While other dogs also played similar roles and were paraded for the media, Roger captured the island’s imagination — partly because of his backstory of an initial career failure. But his ebullient personality and intelligence made him a much better candidate to be a rescue dog, which was the career that was then chosen for him. Kaohsiung Fire DepartmentChen Chih-san, captain of the rescue dog unit of the Kaohsiung Fire Department, told reporters that Roger was transferred to the rescue training school when he was 1 year old. According to the Kaohsiung City Government, Roger was certified by the International Rescue Dog Organization in 2022, an accolade last achieved by a Taiwanese rescue dog in 2019. By some estimates, there are tens of millions of surveillance cameras in the United States. "In most of the US, CCTV cameras have proliferated over the past few decades," an expert told Insider. There are tens of millions of surveillance cameras in the United States alone, by some estimates, with some of the most populated cities in the country more heavily surveilled than others. There could be up to 100 million surveillance cameras in the USPeterson, an adjunct professor at New York's John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said that there could be up to 100 million surveillance cameras in the US, but it's impossible to say for sure because "many public and private entities own and deploy their own surveillance systems." "Between Ring cameras, security cameras, store cameras, red light cameras, cameras on the highway, you are always under surveillance," Stanton, who authored the book, "Prepared Not Scared," told Insider.

Troops in Ukraine are receiving just weeks to learn to use advanced military equipment. Bradley fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, for example, take US troops months to master. CNN's Jim Sciutto reported that Ukrainian troops are not receiving adequate training to use the donated munitions and equipment fast enough to push back Russian forces. Instead of conducting head-on attacks on Russian positions using complicated Western maneuvers, Ukrainian troops encountering heavily defended Russian positions are trying to wear the enemy down with artillery and missile barrages. Due to the slow progress of its counteroffensive as they face Russian positions protected by minefields, helicopter gunships, and artillery fire, Ukrainian troops are abandoning US tactics to seize back territory from Russia, Insider previously reported.

July 27 (Reuters) - Britain's Centrica (CNA.L) proposed a 33% increase in its interim dividend on Thursday after posting a jump in first-half profits, buoyed by higher returns from its British Gas supply business. The British Gas Energy supply division posted adjusted profits of 969 million pounds ($1.25 billion) compared with 98 million the same period last year. Centrica said some 500 million pounds of this related to changes to the regulator's price cap which allowed the company to recoup previously lost costs. The company also announced plans to invest 4 billion pounds by 2028 on security of supply, energy flexibility and renewable power. Overall Centrica's adjusted operating profit for the first six months of 2023 rose to 2.08 billion pounds up from 1.34 billion pounds a year earlier.

Moscow’s accusation that Ukraine used sea drones to attack and significantly damage Russia’s Kerch Strait Bridge to Crimea on Monday has put a spotlight on a weapon that could pose a particularly difficult threat for the Kremlin. He said they would have traveled across the Black Sea at a speed slow enough to minimize their wake and foil radar detection. For Ukraine, with its navy effectively blockaded and outmatched by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the appeal of unmanned surface vessels is clear. Russia accused Ukraine in October of attacking its Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol, the fleet’s base, with seven sea drones as well as aerial drones. On Sunday, Russia’s defense ministry said it had foiled another such attack in Sevastopol, involving two sea drones and aerial drones.

During Wagner Group's revolt in June, its mercenaries shot down several Russian military aircraft. The loss of one of Russia's few Il-22M could hinder its air force's ability to operate over Ukraine. Wagner Group's abortive revolt last month didn't just end with its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, fleeing the country and its troops being absorbed into the Russian military. A drone strike triggered a blast so large it swallowed a Russian tank, suggesting it was laden with explosives. It was so powerful that the explosives hidden inside were likely to be measured in tons. Russian troops are experimenting with repurposing their aging vehicles as rolling bombs. This triggered an explosion and fireball so massive that experts immediately saw it as confirmation of the latest brute force tactic by Russia troops: exploding tanks. The tank exploded in Marinka, a front line in Ukraine's east where the Russians have tried kamikaze tanks recently.
